As Project Officer on the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme, I have represented my employer Mouchel on this £45m project of high regional importance since its early infancy. The project is being carried out in partnership with Arup, The Environment Agency and BAM Nuttal and has given me the chance to work on a wide variety of tasks, ranging from pre-construction challenges to dealing with tender enquiries from members of the public and contractors. My main roles and responsibilities include:-Working on gaining access to land and properties along the schemes route, dealing with landowners, managing agents and lease holders to help mediate the process due to the challenges of construction on private land restricted access.-Working on AutoCAD to create drawings identifying land ownership boundaries, access routes and areas to be adopted/maintained by LCC.-Attending site meetings to make sure plans are running to schedule with various contractors and applying the principles of the NEC Contract. This has allowed me to develop an understanding of how large construction schemes work from the costing to the implementation stages.- Working on discharging planning conditions set by the client due to the high level of restrictions of this large scale complex scheme.

I worked within the Partnership and Strategic Overview team at the Environment Agency's Leeds office as a Flood and Coastal Risk Management Officer on a 12 month fixed term contract where I was the lead for Calderdale and Kirklees Local Authorities.As one of the main points of contact for enquiries regarding development in these areas, I had to provide customers with responses within short timescales and the Local Authority with technical advice for developments in flood risk areas, assessing them in line with current policy.I influenced developers and Local Authorities to ensure all developments took into account the impacts of flood risk & climate change, keeping people and property safe over the lifetime of the development. I was also successful at influencing the local authority against approving inappropriate development in areas of significant flood risk.I worked with a number of different people, teams and wide variety of customers and business associates.As part of the role, I played a key part in helping to deliver an area wide development programme for flood risk management and organising a multi agency workshop on ‘Partnership Funding’ for senior members of staff and a number of external guests.I also worked one day a week in the planning team within the Environment Agency to help create a vital link and knowledge transfer between the planning and flood risk management teams. I worked on Local Authority consultations and provided technical comments on planning applications.

Whilst searching for jobs in environmental planning after graduation, I worked for landscape lighting design firm Fuzzwire. In this role, I worked in the creative design department, carrying out general admin tasks as well as liaising with clients and customers to meet demand and ensure the design of the product is to the client’s specification. It involved regular travel to sites across the UK to deal with any snagging issues when setting up Christmas themed displays at shopping centres and other public sites.
