Ionosphere-Thermosphere (IT) system modeling: - Compiled and built empirical models, written in Fortran, to model different parameters of the IT system, such as electron density, ion drift velocity and neutral wind velocity- Provided assistance to lab mates using the models to facilitate and ensure proper usageData Processing: - Processed a variety of IT system measurements, such as: TEC measurements from GPS satellites; and electron density measurements from satellites, ionosondes, and incoherent scatter radars to be used in data assimilation techniques Data Assimilation: - Troubleshooted and modified an existing data assimilation algorithm (EMPIRE) that combined measurements and models to estimate the drivers of the IT system - Improved run time by half and extended the algorithms ability to model electric potential at lower latitudes- Tested algorithm's performance by comparing to independent data sources - Presented results in the department's annual student poster competition Langrangian Coherent Structures in the Ionosphere:- Used the Langrangian Coherent Structures technique to study the propagation and formation of polar cap patches in the ionosphere using data assimilation derived flows- Presented results at the 2018 Coupling, Energetics and Dynamics of Atmospheric Regions (CEDAR) workshopThis work was supported by the National Science Foundation AGS-1352602.
