The Centers of Excellence are part of GSA's Technology Transformation Services organization, which helps federal agencies make services more accessible, efficient and effective. There are several efforts underway to leverage digital technology to fix the U.S. government. I spent three years doing that as part of the U.S. Digital Service and now I'm trying to figure out how to use a different tool, the Centers of Excellence, to do more civic tech goodness.

I provided leadership and innovative solutions for the Department of Homeland Security as part of the unique public sector experiment that is the U.S. Digital Service (USDS). A startup launched by The White House during the Obama administration, USDS uses design and technology to deliver better services to the American people. I led a transformation of USCIS's digital product development for enterprise software. Collaborating with people from all levels of the organization, from leadership all the way down to contract developers, I introduced a comprehensive system of product discovery, design and development.I also worked with FEMA to try to transform their disjointed grant programs into a single, well-orchestrated and efficient digital system.

Led the transformation of Marriott International’s mobile experience design practice. Responsible for the experiences of users on the company’s native applications (iOS and Android). In conjunction with Experience Design directors and the Experience Design Senior Director, redefined the experiences of Web users on the full spectrum of devices. Served as the UX Lead for development of the company’s first iPad application. Designed forward-thinking mobile device prototypes.

Crafted job descriptions, review resumes and conduct interviews of UX candidates.Collaborated with other Sapient staff and the client to ensure the integrity of the user experience throughout project lifecycles. Managed the design, information architecture and Web analytics resources for the Public Broadcast Service's Interactive team. Responsible for the user experience of PBS.org including the overall information design and usability of the site. Designed, facilitated and analyzed usability testing. Helped lead the introduction of PBS' enterprise Web analytics package. Supervised five designers and a Web analyst.
