Home of Guiding Hands, originally known as the Lutheran Association for Retarded Children, was founded in 1961, as the result of a small but dedicated group of businessmen who wanted something better for their loved ones. At the time, it was common for children with disabilities to be sent to live in large institutional facilities far away from their families. In 1967, when Home of Guiding Hands began operations, the comfortable 15-person homes and serene campus setting were welcome changes from the large and clinical state institutions of the day. Children with disabilities thrived as a result of the compassionate care they received from Home of Guiding Hands.In 1986, our name was changed to Home of Guiding Hands. Over the years, we've branched out to provide additional services such as workshops, school, day programs, as well as independent living support and in-home respite care. In the early 2000’s, the decision was made to close the campus and relocate 150 residents with disabilities into small group homes in several San Diego neighborhoods, in order to provide the opportunity for residents to fully engage in community life. In 2011, Home of Guiding Hands assumed operations of two entities that provided early intervention and transportation services.Home of Guiding Hands has evolved from that 14-acre campus in Lakeside, to operating 27 residential homes. Our organization provides a wide range of services throughout San Diego and Imperial Counties for over 4,600 men, women, and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities every year. We are proud of our long record of advocacy and high-quality services for people with disabilities and continue to partner with the San Diego Regional Center to continue our service to the community.

Founded as the San Diego War Against Litter Committee (WALC) in 1954, I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) has worked to improve the health and beauty of San Diego for over 67 years. In the 1970s, “I Love A Clean San Diego” was the slogan for the organization’s anti-litter campaign. In 1980 it became the organization’s name. In 1989, ILACSD merged with the San Diego Ecology Center, joining two leading environmental organizations together to better serve the community, under one name.Today, our nonprofit is on a mission to create zero waste lifestyles and zero litter throughout San Diego County. ILACSD serves about 100,000 students, adults and businesses every year by providing environmental education, volunteer cleanup and beautification programs, and recycling and zero waste solutions. On average, the organization hosts over 900 workshops and produces 600 community cleanups each year. Community cleanups are responsible for clearing nearly half a million pounds of pollution from the region annually. ILACSD is dedicated to empowering every person to be leaders in conservation and waste-free living in order to protect and improve the health of the home we love.
