To perform a study on feasibility of OpenLCA software application for LCA of a remediation project;2. Evaluate the remediation project from LCA standpoint and review alternative sustainable approaches. Impact categories such as Carcinogenic and Non-Carcinogenic Human Toxicity, Climate Change and Freshwater Eutrophication were evaluated as main parameters. Slurry Wall installation, Pump-and-Treat, Protective Cap formation and Remote Landfilling technologies were analysed and programmed into an LCA model to create a full overview of the project's life cycle - from obtaining raw materials and gasoline usage for transport to use of machinery, construction, disposal of the contaminants and leachate treatment. Alternative scenarios - Monitored Natural Attenuation, Local Incineration and Pulsed Pump-and-Treat - were modelled for comparison. The research lead to the following conclusion: The technologies used for the site remediation were not sustainable. The main contributor to the environmental impact categories studied was construction of the Slurry Wall which should have been substituted with the Monitored Natural Attenuation which is more sustainable and less detrimental to the environment.
