Profile bio

About Valerian Precop

I am proud to say I have more than two decades of programming/coding and technological experience. This means I spent more than 50% of my lifetime as a developer if I count my commercial and study years 😊.I truly believe that Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD) is one of the agile development practices that really pushes people to achieve. It is the one that forces you through its nature to follow the path to self improvement both at the individual levels and at the company and department levels. It is the umbrella that brings together a lot of other good methodologies and principles and design patterns, all of which you need to acquire and learn in order to be successful in your CI/CD adventure. There is no such thing as a silver bullet solution for a given requirement and you should “continuously” 😉, strive towards that golden spot (hence CI/CD 🙂). Even if in the beginning the solution might be great, over time things tend to get outdated, slow down or be overwhelmed by volume… and that happens even when you don’t change one single thing from your first implementation.I am an atheist (or maybe polytheist 👀🙂?) when it comes to languages, frameworks, patterns, principles and methodologies. There is no way to succeed unless you analyse the reality of your specific situation and look around at multiple possible solutions and approaches.

Over time, I cultivated a robust team of developers capable of meeting challenges and delivering high-quality features under strict deadlines. Our primary technical objective during this period was to ensure the stability of our systems and continually enhance both customer experience and system performance. We achieved our goals as a team by adopting newer industry-standard tools. I played a significant role in this by incorporating webpack integration into all frontend projects and introducing new centralized monitoring and logging systems like hotjar and sentry.io during my time with the team.My role allowed me to take the lead on several high-priority and business-critical projects, including eviivo suite 4 - media library, auth, multi-property group, user management, and mobile app, and guide them to the production phase. My work consistently involved liaising with people from all teams, not just my own.Throughout these projects, I was constantly engaged with numerous individuals from around the business, including our CTO, product managers, developers, team leads, managers, heads of departments, and even our CEO.As a technical lead, it was always my duty to handle the full SDLC (software development lifecycle) and the complete CI/CD pipelines on a lot of the projects across multiple teams. This naturally involved a considerable amount of release planning

DevSecOps - The TechProd Team- tech production oncall- graylog- grafana- opsginie- CI/CD TeamCity, Automic GmbH Broadcom- powershell- performance profiling (SLQ, CPU, memory)- PCI compliance- load balancing- software design and software architectureI was a member of this team for a considerable length of time, starting with my first position as a team leader. This role granted me substantial exposure to the company’s complete production platform, as our team was entrusted with its 24/7 care in weekly rotations. The job involved significant monitoring, analysis, and troubleshooting across not just one project or technical flow, but the entire interaction of a host of systems. It required performance analysis and a deep understanding of why we encountered specific problems. It also involved considerable work on the CI/CD pipelines and constant refinement to ensure our platform remained stable at all times, including during the release and rollout phases.A significant portion of the analysis results from this role often reverberated back into our business projects that were in the pipeline or set to kick off. This role was a key component that aided me in grasping how to architect or design a specific solution or business implementation during the development phase. Our team members were invariably the first responders in the event of any platform-related problems. We were perpetually on guard during our rota, maintaining constant communication with managers and leads from all other departments, even having direct contact with our CEO.

This diverse team comprised developers and QA members of varying experience levels.During this period, my primary technical emphasis was on fortifying our core projects to ensure stability and enhance performance. This required extensive analysis and technical profiling, spanning from SQL servers to the web front end.I had the privilege of leading two substantial projects during my tenure with the team: the guest management project and the multi-business diary project. The company’s product continues to incorporate both of them as essential functionalities to this date.I was always under regular communication with numerous members within the R&D department, as well as with managers and leads from other departments. My dual role as a DevOps engineer complimented my primary responsibilities, allowing me to achieve greater success during deliveries. Also having responsibility as a technical lead, I consistently managed the complete SDLC (software development lifecycle) and the entire CI/CD pipelines on each project I or my team members were part of. This, of course, always required a significant amount of release planning.

"The Web Team"- team management- recruitment and hiring- guidance and coaching- yearly reviews- technical and project lead- senior developer- solution design and architecting- Kanban with Jira- CI/CD TeamCity & Octopus Deploy- ElasticSearch- Hotjar- SEO- Google AnalyticsAfter successfully architecting, developing, and integrating the new payment gateway with Ogone (which later became Ingenico) across the company’s projects, I assumed leadership of The Web Team. Initially, I had to reconstruct the majority of the team due to previous members pursuing other opportunities. My primary responsibilities included reviewing CVs of potential candidates, conducting interviews, and facilitating the onboarding process for new team members in our department. Our team utilised Scrum methodologies initially, and subsequently transitioned to Kanban, leveraging Jira as our project management tool. This approach enabled us to efficiently manage our workload, monitor our progress, and ensure timely deliveries. The team’s most significant accomplishment was the successful delivery of ‘eviivo WLS 2.0’, a comprehensive overhaul and redesign of the White Label System solution. This project required extensive technical design and strategic planning. Collaborating with my team and my key developer, Renato, we introduced ElasticSearch to enhance our search functionality speed. We also heavily prioritised SEO analysis and implementation, driven by our continuous evaluation of Google Analytics data.Following the release of the first major version, I implemented a significant change in our solution delivery approach by transitioning the team to a rapid delivery plan. This strategy enabled us to swiftly deliver crucial fixes and enhancements in small, incremental stages. This shift dramatically improved our responsiveness to weekly and daily feedback from Google Analytics.

This project, the new payment gateway integration with Ogone (later became Ingenico), ushered me into my first leadership position at the company. I was tasked with the full system architecture, from data modelling to all the APIs, data flows, and all third-party connections to the new gateway. This project has been extended and remains in use today, with more payment gateways being added over time.
