About Vanessa Wells

With over 20 years of experience in the arts industry, I am a filmmaker and theatre practitioner who strives to create impactful stories that inspire, educate, and entertain audiences. I am a board member of WIFTNZ, and an executive committee member of Te Puna Matarau, a network of Canterbury screen professionals who advocate for sector development, foster a local screen community, and deliver industry-led initiatives. As a filmmaker, I have worked on various projects, from documentaries to interactive works, that showcase the diversity and richness of New Zealand culture and history. My debut feature documentary, EAST TO EAST, about a group of teenagers completing the iconic Coast to Coast multi-sport event, screened to sell-out houses at NZIFF 2018. Award-winning interactive works, such as GIVE KATE A VOICE, that combine innovative technology and design with immersive storytelling have also been hugely rewarding to be part of.Lately I have focused on work in polar regions, specifically the Ross Sea region of Antarctica. My latest feature documentary is THE CLIMATE CANARY. Check out my posts to learn more, or contact me - I'm always happy to talk film and story!

The "bread and butter", the "side hustle", occasionally the "moonlight" job when the roadworks are outside, the kids are home sick, or the client is in London... over the last 12 years my voice work has been a constant - and I love it. I keep it separate from my film-making (although I think of them as cousins).
