With the Digital Depot in place, there is still a challenge in getting the digital information created and stored by the archive producers into the repository. The information needs to be appraised, selected, and transformed into useful information packages while maintaining their authenticity and integrity.
To ensure digital archives from remain accessible, the Dutch National Archives has implemented a Digital Depot, where digital archives can be stored and preserved. As Product Specialist, I advise the collection managers of both the National Archives and the other Dutch archival institutions that use the Digital Depot, and discuss the needs for changes and additions with the supplier and the international user group.
As Information Security Officer, I maintain the information security policy, regularly assess our information and the information systems for risks to confidentiality, integrity and availability, and discuss, design and implement the controls selected by the information systems owners to migitate the risks.
With the Government keeping their records more and more in digital born or digitized form, we run the risk of information dementia: files can be stored on media that is no longer in use, their bitstreams can become corrupt and files can be stored in obsolete file formats for which we no longer have the programs to view them.To prevent our digital archives from being lost forever, the Dutch National Archives is developing a Digital Depot, where digital archives can be stored in a sustainable, long-term accessible way.
