Profile bio

About Vivien Bonvin

Born and raised surrounded by the beautiful Swiss mountains, I moved closer to lake Geneva in 2008 to start my academic studies at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. I graduated from EPFL five years later with a Master of Sciences in Physics.Passionate about computers, and very curious to know more about what lies beyond the sky in the vastness of space, I found a way to combine these two topics by starting doctoral studies in the Laboratory of Astrophysics at EPFL. I became Docteur ès Sciences (PhD) in 2017, and have been pursuing my research work about the expansion of the Universe until 2019After a successful exploration of the academic world, I decided in 2019 to broaden my horizons and turn towards the industry. I am now very fortunate to work at NetGuardians, a company that use the most recent developments in machine learning and artificial intelligence research to fight banking fraud.

Listed skills include Computational Physics, Matlab, Latex, Python, and 14 others.

Data Scientist

Yverdon-Les-Bains

I develop advanced machine learning algorithms using state-of-the-art artificial intelligence research in order to prevent banking fraud.

Jul 2019 - Mar 2021

Postdoctoral Research Scientist

Région De Lausanne, Suisse

My research work was the continuation of my PhD work. I focuses on improving the statistical precision with which the expansion rate of Universe, also called the Hubble constant, is measured. To this end, I design new observational strategies, develop new data acquisition and analysis pipelines and improve the theoretical framework upon which the analysis is based. The high quality of my research had me invited to participate to the 69th Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting, in which I had the opportunity to present my work in front of Nobel Laureates and bright young scientists from all around the world.

Oct 2017 - Jun 2019

Phd Student

Observatoire De Sauverny

My main research project regrouped all the aspects of data science. I was in charge of coordinating data acquisition from optical telescopes all around the world, developing automated data reduction pipelines to clean the acquired data and go through intense data visualisation and analysis to extract robust measurements of quantities of interest for astrophysics. To this end, I notably devised a novel way to assess the robustness of my measurements in a Bayesian framework. I implemented this new method in a time-series analysis Python package called PyCS and entered an astrophysical data processing challenge. PyCS was the most accurate technique of the competition, and also proved to be very robust at estimating its uncertainties. As a result, it is now seen as a state-of-the-art tool in my field of research, with more and more researchers adopting it in their work. The success of my work as a PhD student and then post-doctoral researched can be well summarized by two milestones. In 2017, I published an scientific article quantifying the expansion rate of the Universe, that has been featured in a NASA/ESA press release and that is currently part of the top 5% of the most impactful research article ever tracked by Altmetric. It generated a strong interest in the astrophysical community, notably from Nobel prize winner Prof. Adam Riess, and was also broadly covered in mainstream media such as the New York Times, Le Figaro, Le Temps, The Guardian and the BBC, among many others. Thanks to this international recognition, I have been awarded the 2018 Edith Alice Müller Award by the Swiss Society of Astronomy and Astrophysics for my work.

Sep 2013 - Oct 2017

President

The International Physicists' Tournament, or IPT, is a problem-based learning competition for university students, where participants have six months to solve physical problems as a team of six, and then gather with other teams from all around the world for a week during which they present, debate and defend their solutions. The spice of the competition is that none of the problems has a known solution; they are all mini-research project that can be explored from various ways, ranging from pure theoretical development to a more empirical approach where experiences are designed to acquire data and analyze them.I organized the IPT at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 2013 and 2014, and have been elected President of the Tournament from 2014 to 2017. Under my leadership, the tournament nearly doubled in size, and will be welcoming ~200 participants from 20 countries during one full week for its 11th edition.

Apr 2014 - Oct 2017

Internship

Observatoire De Sauverny

My internship follows the work done during my master thesis: it aimed to reproduce numerically the formation and evolution of spiral-type galaxies and their chemical properties, using a complex chemodynamical evolution code called GEAR. I worked with the GEAR team at the Observatory of Sauverny, as a member of the Laboratory of Astrophysics of EPFL.
