Senior scientist in RTI International’s Center of Communication and Media Impact. She is a health communication expert with a background in communication strategy, consumer and physician decision making, and regulatory affairs. In her role, Dr. Boudewyns leads and contributes to mixed-method research and evaluation projects in topic areas including HIV prevention and treatment, prescription drug promotion, risk and health communication, consumer perceptions of medical devices, regulatory science, and patient–provider communication. She has advanced skills in experimental design, research design and analysis, survey development, project management, and research dissemination.During her time at RTI, Dr. Boudewyns has extensive experience leading FDA-funded research studies related to understanding how healthcare providers and patients perceive and make behavioral decisions based on prescription drug information. This body of research helps to inform the agency’s development of industry guidance and improve promotional information to advance public health. Her recent projects focus on the impact of implied or misleading claims in promotional messages as well as patient understanding of oncology clinical endpoints that measure a clinical benefit, such as overall survival. For over a decade, Dr. Boudewyns has also contributed to research focused on HIV prevention and testing. More recently, her research has focused on evaluating and informing social marketing campaigns designed to increase awareness and uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among Black women and Healthcare providers. She has helped develop a theoretical framework to guide current and future public health initiatives and conducted process and outcome evaluations for multiple national HIV/AIDS social marketing campaigns for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention designed to stop HIV stigma and to encourage the uptake of HIV prevention strategies, including biomedical interventions.
