Brainwash invites the world’s most influential artists and thinkers to share their ground-breaking insights and visionary ideas. Since 2014, they have been welcoming the biggest names in philosophy, literature, theatre, science and politics from Europe and beyond.With their events, festivals, articles, podcasts and television broadcasts, they challenge you to think about the state of the world. They offer unexpected insights on economy, ecology, democracy and (mental) health. I visited the first edition of the festival in 2014 and became their designer since 2015.

I started of as an intern in 2015, after visiting the first edition of Brainwash Festival in 2014. Afterwards I kept being involved by working as a freelance graphic designer.

Together with the Brainwash-team at Omroep Human, we set up a new product called Brainwash Bits. This is an online web series, about a wide scala of social-cultural topics such as discrimination, the housing market, light pollution, healthcare, refugees, freedom, and so on.In the first phase of the project my role was mainly to rebrand the whole brainwash visual look and feel. After this was properly developed, my role shifted to illustrating the visual elements who support the story in the web serie episodes.

The School of Life was founded by Alain de Botton in 2008. In 2014, entrepreneur Laurens Knoop launched The School of Life in Amsterdam. In 2015 I started as their graphic designer intern, in 2016 I kept being involved by working remote as a freelancer, while finishing my social & cultural work studies. In 2017 I started working fulltime as their in-house designer, working closely with the marketingteam.

Polo de Haas has been playing the piano for over 40 years. For the last few years I made the promotion materials for his concerts in Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam. In 2020 I designed his music album with improvisations from the 1980s and 2020s.

For this project I worked with Cafe Harlem, famously known for serving the best nachos of Amsterdam. We created a new look for their menus, to match the chill and lively atmosphere of the cafe.

The shawarma bar Ben Cohen has been a household name in Amsterdam for the late night snacker since 1978. In this project I redesigned there menus to match their brand new streetfood-brand identity.

Youth and Music Centre Kinky Star is a non-profit organisation which almost fully depends on volunteer work. Each year, it has over 300 bands playing on their tiny stage and counts on more than one honderd volunteers to do so. I loved bartending during these events. To be able to watch people enjoy music as well as having all the cliché conversations you experience as a bartender, but also learning how to deal with difficult customers... I learned an awful lot about sober and intoxicated human behaviour.

BOEK: 20 jaar Kinky Star — Alles wat je je (niet meer) herinnertKinky Star groeide in de afgelopen twintig jaar uit tot een jeugd- en muziekcentrum dat bekend is tot ver buiten de landsgrenzen. Spelen in de Gentse muziekclub, op de befaamde en beruchte Vlasmarkt, kan binnen de Belgische muziekscene beschouwd worden als een rite de passage voor beginnende bands. Jaarlijks staan er meer dan driehonderd bekende en minder bekende namen uit uiteenlopende alternatieve en underground genres op het podium. Kleine bands die groots waren, grote bands toen die nog klein waren, dj's, kunstenaars, performers uit de meest diverse artistieke vertakkingen kleurden de club van duisterzwart, over een regenboog aan schakeringen, tot helwit. Voetstappen op het plafond, zweet en bier op de lens van de fotograaf, dampende lijven en een nasmeulend podium: allemaal bevoorrechte getuigen van wat er zich mag afspelen voorbij de deur van Vlasmarkt 9, waar het eigenlijk altijd een beetje Gentse Feesten is. For a few months I made visuals for their website brainwash.nl, which contains a lot of articles written by the members of the Brainwash Academy, young philosophers share their thoughts on current important topics.

Formaat is the federation of Flemish youth clubs, they support over 400 youth clubs throughout Flanders. As an intern, my main occupation was an investigation about communication and visibility of youth clubs in an urban context. How are they supposed to get on the radar? What keeps people involved? How does volunteering work in a fast moving city? I ended up making a route to guide young volunteers to think about communication, visibility, branding in a different light and create awareness about the importance of them for your organisation. This route was completed with an interactive toolbox, with exercises, questions, tips and tools to increase their visibility and voice in a competitive urban environment. The route as well as the toolbox is used by Formaat to educate youth clubs about these topics.

The Gentse Jeugdraad is a political body which advises the local government about decisions involving youth and children. For two years I was their graphic designer.

After I graduated, I returned to Jusbox as a graphic designer for a few months. Although I really liked it, I started a second Bachelor studies in October, so we had to go separate ways.

After my studies graphic design, I got an internship at Jusbox, a design and communication company. In this period of time, I put all the skills I learned at school to a test. The progress I made thanks to this opportunity was huge, mostly because the teamleaders at Jusbox were very trusting and gave me a lot of responsibility to manage my own work.
