When our youngest son was a first-grader, he told me that his teacher did not like him. Broken-hearted, I asked him why he thought such a thing. Sadly, he said, "Because I get into trouble a lot."As an educator, I understood that our talkative, outgoing first-grader needed correction for interrupting the class. However, he was getting the wrong message due to the school's behavioral management program.When I became the principal of his school, I remembered our son's first-grade discouragement. So, my first initiative centered on making a paradigm shift in the school's behavioral management procedures. We encouraged our teachers to focus on and acknowledge each student's positive character before the necessary correction.It worked! Encouraged children. Minimized classroom disruptions. Focused learning environments. Parents even noticed a difference in their children at home.As a result, this unique learning environment benefited students beyond their social-emotional development: their character and academic achievement began to stand out in our community. Rather than simply educating students about good character, we cultivated a heart-based mindset to guide students' behavior and decision-making.When teachers moved from our school, they asked permission to 'take' the classroom management system to their new schools. Ultimately, we realized that we could help students and teachers beyond the walls of our school. So, a small team of educators further developed the program and created a nonprofit, making it available to other schools.So far, the HONORABLE CHARACTER Classroom Management System moved beyond one school's walls into schools and homes in 43 states and 14 countries.Our philosophy is simple. Focus on children's honorable character. Then, stand back and witness their significant gains in character, academics, and social-emotional development, preparing them to become productive citizens.Build character.
