Hot take: Analytics is art (not AN art - art.)I’ll explain: Art, to me, is the creative representation of a concept whose end result inspires others to think about something in a new, different way. An artist is someone who finds fulfillment in the process of creation. As an artist, I've found the same kind of fulfillment in pulling insights from data, in programming and designing data pipelines, that I get from visual arts and writing. I love solving complex problems and seeing impact from my solution; I love honing my craft by learning from my super-smart mentors; I LOVE deepening my knowledge of programming and picking up new languages (Elixir and functional programming are my current obsession!)Ultimately, I believe that creativity is the secret ingredient to impactful data analysis, effective data pipelines, and insightful data storytelling. Professionally, I thrive in environments where analytical thinking meets creative freedom and get a thrill out of finding fresh ways to drive organizational impact - whether that involves optimizing ETLs and queries to be more efficient or discovering new ways to empower my colleagues with insights that allow them to deploy their time and their budget more effectively. Are you an analytics or engineering artist?
