As a dedicated and experienced police officer, I served in Cardiff between 1984 and 2014, where I held various roles, including Community Constable, CID, Armed Response Groups, and Community Safety. In the last 15 years of my service, I served as a Community Safety officer, where I held responsibilities for emergency planning contingencies for the city of Cardiff, supporting 40,000 students with regard to crime and personal safety, supporting vulnerable elderly members of the community, leading on distraction burglary related crime and leading on asylum seekers and refugee integration. Additionally, I had responsibilities for supporting victims of racial, homophobic and disability-related hate crime.In 2008, I was deployed to the 'Channel Project', initiated by the UK Government to support individuals drawn towards any form of violent extremism. Cardiff was one of nine locations in the UK to receive Channel funding, later known as ‘Prevent’. Cardiff led the UK in devising various strategies to support vulnerable individuals. Unlike other areas of the UK where ‘Prevent’ received negative exposure, Cardiff quickly gained the respect of Muslim communities through positive engagement.Throughout my police service, I gained considerable experience engaging with a large number of vulnerable individuals, holding extreme ‘far right’ or ‘Islamist’ political views and ideologies. I worked closely with the families of those involved in terrorist campaigns and others whose sons’ had travelled to join terrorist groups in Kenya (Al-Shabaab) and Syria (ISIS).During my career, I worked closely with statutory partners across the South Wales area; Local Authorities, the Health Service (particularly mental health), Probation and Higher Education and on behalf of South Wales Police, I led the design and delivery of bespoke Prevent training (including WRAP - Workshops to Raise Awareness of Prevent) to staff within the police service, statutory and external partners alike.
