About Vinicius Rossi
Let me tell you about the moment when it all clicked...I was fresh out of a trainee program and eager to prove myself. As most people would, I started taking on every action tossed around in team meetings and participating in every improvement project I could find. You can imagine that as a consequence, I started working longer and longer hours, which at first did not seem like a problem since I thought I was changing the department for the better. When my first performance review came around, I was proud and certain I was gonna get the praise I thought I deserved. But as I sat eagerly waiting, my mentor hit me with these words: "You're overloaded. The team needs to do more. You need to change that".I have to admit, at first I was confused and even a bit angry. After all, I had put so much effort into improving our department that I thought I deserved recognition. But that's when it all clicked... I realized in that moment that I was being taught an invaluable lesson: I was learning first hand about the true meaning of leadership. You see, my mentor allowed me to take all those responsibilities on purpose. He was trying to teach me that it did not matter how good of a problem solver I was or how many hours I worked - I was only one person. A few more months and I could be moving onto a new role while my team, which I deprived so much of a higher expectation for ownership, would stay. Sure, I was learning and doing lots, but what about the people around me? The ones who were there for the long term? The ones who would train future team members and devote their careers to that process? Not only was I annoying them by micromanaging, but I was also turning them into more dependable employees. It was simply an unsustainable and inefficient strategy. That was when I realized what I really wanted for my career. The day I embarked on this journey of never ending learning and development. That's when I decided I wanted to be a leader. In the few weeks that followed, I started learning and applying the true meaning of the word. I realized that a leader develops when they raise expectations, empowers when they trust people with more, and recognizes that failures tend to be great learning opportunities. A leader inspires when they demonstrate integrity, respect, and drive, but most importantly, a leader is only truly consequential when they achieve more through their teams than by themselves. From that day on I started measuring my worth not by my own achievements, but based on my ability to build, develop, and get the most out of my teams.
