My main duties involved meeting/greeting prospective international students with their families and taking them on campus tours. I also had to occasionally take other international recruiting and consulting firms for campus and city tours and to invite them to consider the University of York as a client for their countries of interest. By regularly dealing with such students, families and firms from various nationalities, ages and backgrounds, I was able to acquire valuable skills in effectively identifying the client’s niches and effectively selling them on the points advantageous to the University. Through this opportunity I gained valuable experience regarding protocols on working with invertebrates such as ants, including how to deal/handle them. I also gained deep understanding and knowledge about behaviour changes in super colonies with respect to individual behaviour. My position as a co-researcher helped me develop and understand the importance of accuracy and precision while using scientific equipment. As part of my research I was also able to hone my skills in computing and processing raw data using tools such as SPSS for statistical analysis. During my post as a student researcher, I came up with a new method of housing individual ants called an “ant-cave”, during exploratory behavior analysis which proved to be better that current methods used in literature. As a result I will be co-authoring the paper when the research Is due to be published in an international journal alter next year. Show less

I was directly involved with managing endangered species habitats, by helping clean up and create habitats inside the local beck to protect the endangered water vole of England. The team lead by me successfully completed the re-habitation program as sightings of water vole and nest spotting were confirmed by the local environment agency. I planned practical tasks, ordered material and wrote risk assessments every day before leading groups such as these to tackle various conservation tasks around the reserve. Through this opportunity I was trained in various conservation practical skills such as coppicing, scything, species identification, habitat management, tree surgery, first aid, invasive species management, and even engineering and construction of wheel-chair friendly pathways. I performed various regular checks around the reserve on flora and fauna regarding health, growth and ecosystem management. Science communication was also an integral part of the internship; I was regularly involved with teaching conservation to children aged 14-16 years of age and university students. Within the 6 months I was placed at the reserve, I helped improve volunteer retention rates, increased surveys and public poll participation, constructed and completed a fully functioning wheel-chair access path, helped develop a ecosystem for an endangered species (Water vole) and performed outreach to the University of York, YUSU (York university students union) and YUSU volunteering officers helping the charity to network with various student bodies for increased volunteering opportunities for the local student community. As a part of the YSIS program, I was one amongst 6 students selected out of nearly more than 300 applicants to teach the ‘Science of food and environment’ at a local primary school (Osbaldwick Primary School). Our partnering agency was FERA, with whom we had to organise a trip for the students at the end of our entire 4 week teaching session. Working closely with FERA and the school, we had been tasked with a difficult job of conveying and translating complicated and sophisticated science such as GMOs, food miles and national food security to year 5 students. We however successfully managed to not only teach but engrain concepts through conducting in-class scientific experiments such as DNA extraction and an interactive teaching style. We were praised for our efforts by both FERA and the school as the students shocked the scientists at FERA with self-made concepts dealing with food security in Britain with a variety of solution consisting from organic farming to GMOs. As part of this project I earned valuable experiences and skill to translate and communicate effectively by converting the desired information to an easily understandable material by focusing on the target audience. Impressed with my work ethics, the staff and faculty increased my internship duration to 4 months and allowed me to uptake an almost equal role as an aquarist at the zoo. I gained firsthand experience in handling, feeding, cleaning and conducting health checks on various animals such as piranhas, dwarf crocodiles, Burmese python, penguins, axolotl, jelly fish, baby sharks and sting rays, Asian three toed otters, nutria, and nearly 33,000 different species of aquatic organisms. I was also trained in handling dangerous animals such as pythons, crocodiles and sharks to conduct health checks. Furthermore, I was also involved with the biochemistry aspect of the zoo as I helped monitor water sanity and chemical composition for optimal living conditions for the animals. The internship also trained me how to culture live shrimps and mysids for fish feed. As the establishment was primarily a tourism based industry, I regularly engaged and educated the tourists from all over the globe on a daily basis helping me improve my communication skills vastly.
