The Ground Systems Operator (GSO) plays an essential role in the operation and maintenance of terrestrial infrastructure critical for space missions. This position involves hands-on responsibility for the systems used to communicate with, control, and monitor satellites or spacecraft orbiting the Earth. As a GSO, one ensures the operational integrity and efficiency of ground systems, which include antennas, control stations, servers, and software used for data processing and command issuance. The role requires a blend of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work under pressure to maintain seamless communication between space assets and ground teams. GSOs are instrumental in supporting a wide range of operations, from satellite launches and routine communication checks to emergency response and mission-critical decision-making.

As the Data Operations Control Room Lead and senior 1st shift crew chief, I lead a team supporting real-time ground system services responsible for configuring, monitoring, and recovering critical ground systems services while minimizing critical service outages when anomalous situations occur. These services include telemetry routing, storage, payload commanding, voice and the video distribution required to support Space Station payload developers worldwide. Additional responsibilities include:• Responding to emergencies and critical service outages by implementing procedures to mitigate risk to personnel, science, and the facility.• Acting as a point of contact for management to relay the status of major problems and critical outages.• Analyzing logs to facilitate troubleshooting ground system anomalies.• Conducting collaborative interviews for potential data controllers.• Providing on-the-job training for cadre positions and external partners.• Ensuring compliance with all corporate and NASA policies and procedures.• Training, certifying, and verifying personnel training plans.• Developing documentation and procedures that control activities within the Data Operations Control Room.

As the 3rd shift crew chief, I held the authority and responsibility for the initial response of a critical service outage, determining the extent of the outage, and making a timely decision on recovery actions within a thirty minute window. I also initiated the recall of all necessary support personnel if standard recovery procedures failed to restore critical service(s). Other support functions include:• Coordinating resource distribution necessary for operations within the HOSC facility.• Ensuring that console positions were adequately staffed for operations based on planned activities.• Acting as a point-of-contact for sick, late, scheduled “on-call” support, and for all off-going console personnel.• Preparing, designing, and verifying testing environments and simulations for internal and external payload developers.
