As Human Resource Director, I am constantly looking for top performing engineers for my employer’s fast-growing practice. In my quest of recruiting high preforming engineers, I have notice they generally face the following 3 main challenges:Challenge # 1 My first choice would be to own my own practice but…Getting in business requires capital, it is a risky proposition, don’t have any experience at it, I like doing engineering work and not sure to be motivated in spending lots of time learning how to build a profitable business. I have existing financial and family commitments and I cannot afford to wait 5 years before starting to make real money. Challenge # 2 Finding a ground floor opportunity that is solid is not evident…There are lots of opportunities on the marketplace, but most ground floor opportunities are from practices who are just starting and really do not have enough history to convince me that they are financially stable. Can’t afford to join a firm who could go belly up! Opportunities in larger and established firms offer progressive ownership plan which amounts to crumbs really or meaningless share percentages ownership. It feels like an opportunity to be a small fish in a sea full of sharks!Challenge # 3 Want to enjoy an income level that matches my performanceAlthough I know in a job situation, I am only exchanging time for money, but I want to enjoy a decent income and see opportunities to raise that income. I want my income to reflect my creativity, talent, ability, experience and to be paid for my superior performance. Large practices have a lengthy and tuff way up the ladder and small firms have a very unpredictable future.
