He was probably the first one in HK to introduce a new course module on "mobile radio communications" for MSc degree at The University of Hong Kong. In particular, he undertook and regularly demonstrated the outputs of the several major advanced research and development projects on digital mobile radio communications, namely; the Mobile Radio Resource Planning; and the next generation mobile radio comm. systems. In recent years, he conducted R&D in the field of the GPS/GIS/wireless based Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). As a result of continuous efforts & activities, he has established several collaborative R&D programs with various PRC telecom. institutions & education organizations, and he also became the first committee member of the 4th National Telecommunication Conference of PRC from Hong Kong.Dr. Lam has been active locally & internationally in the field of digital mobile radio communications and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). He has published more than 80 technical papers. Collaborative Research EngineerBritish Telecom Research Laboratory Sep 1984 - Jan 1988UkDr. Lam became a collaborative telecom research engineer of British Telecom Research Laboratory BTRL (industrial collaborative research & development) with the Communication Research Group at the University of Southampton, U.K., working on the pan-European digital cellular mobile radio communications systems which was then known as GSM after the approval of the GSM committee in 1987, and he was responsible for the projects of multiple-access techniques, CD900 (CDMA), radio propagation and adaptive channel equalization of the GSM contending systems. He has also collaborated with the other companies, Plessey Research Laboratory (UK) and Bell Lab (US), in the study of the GSM contending systems of the other EEC (renamed as EU later on) member countries and the British proposal of the GSM systems for the UK industry submitted to the GSM committee. From the above studies, he was awarded a PhD degree in Digital Mobile Radio Communications at the University of Southampton.Summary: Study for the proposals & bidding for GSM standards amongst the EU member countries, followed by R&D and prototype development and publication.
