I completed eight (8) listening shifts with SADAG, with each shift amounting to 4 hours in duration. I was then placed on the “Emergency Counselor” shift list, where I was available as a stand-in counselor for any Permanent-Shift counselor who could not make their shift. I/we would provide help to any person(s) suffering from any mental disorder (including help and assistance to suicide callers) and provide referrals to professionals that would better aid the caller in the long-term. The credence by which the counselors operate with each individual caller is: “assess, contain, and refer” – assess the severity of the problem, and the problem itself; contain the problem to a manageable level for both the caller and the counselor; refer the caller to a more specialized individual, be it a psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, support group, G.P, government hospital etc. This work is done on a voluntary basis, and draws heavily on the theoretical background achieved through the undergraduate Psychology degree which I obtained through UJ, and was particularly appropriate with the course work studied through the Honours program.
