This involved covering a variety of topical, political, social, economic, defense and other issues with an international perspective, including the relevant context. My duties included: • Travelling across the country on reporting missions;• Complementing the AFP news files with feature stories and analytical pieces;• Building and maintaining an extensive list of Afghan and foreign sources, including in the government, military, diplomatic missions, non-government sector and civil society;As a Bureau Manager for AFP my duties included but were not limited to:• Managing a team of stringers in the provinces, fixers, translators and drivers, particularly with the needs of our rotating foreign correspondents in mind;• Overseeing the growing of the Kabul office into a proper bureau as the country began to re-establish itself;• Day-to-day running of the Kabul bureau, including paying rentals and salaries, handling staff issues, contracting technical support and maintenance, working on budgets and accounting;• Reporting on the above to the bureau chief and directly to managers in Hong Kong and Islamabad.
