Wally Baker worked 20+ years for SoCalGas Co and became an economic development executive at LA County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC). Wally has consulted on many port, rail and infrastructure projects. He has produced films, built mobile apps and streaming applications. At Jobs 1st Alliance he co-founded the Beat the Canal Initiative and the delivery of 100,000 highroad infrastructure jobs. Wally is a transportation, energy, labor, economic development, and communications expert.Background-- Beat the Panama Canal (BTC) – is a project Wally developed with Peter Peyton of the Longshore Union, the Southern California Association of Governments, the Southern California Leadership Council, IBEW Los Angeles -- Local 11, LA/OC Building Trade Unions, and local jurisdictions. The initiative encouraged competition between the San Pedro Bay port-related infrastructure construction projects ($7.5B) and the completion of the third lane of the Panama Canal ($5.5B). BTC was widely covered by the Los Angeles Times, NPR, the Economist and many local media outlets.-- Bolsa Chica Wetlands Smart Phone App – Wally has designed and developed many iPhone apps and websites. This app was done in collaboration with California Resources Corporation and three Huntington Beach environmental groups protecting the Bolsa Chica wetlands. The iPhone app tracked your physical location, gave you the 10,000-year history, identify and description of all known animals and plant species in the wetlands. CAREER HIGHLIGHTS-- Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation (1998-2006) – As the Senior Vice President at LAEDC, Wally ran the consulting practice and helped the private non-profit agency retain or grow over 100,000 jobs in Los Angeles County. Created a study of the destination of every container that went thru Ports of LA and Long Beach annually, economic impact of WalMart on Los Angeles County, and economic studies for Alameda Corridor, Alameda Corridor East, Occidental Petroleum, BNSF Railway and Union Pacific.-- Southern California Leadership Council – worked with Lee Harrington and Senator Bob Hertzberg to create and staff the 6-County non-partisan, nonprofit, public policy partnership. Wally recruited the support of former Governors Brown, Deukmejian, Wilson and Davis and targeted critical issues and many good economic policies. Wally also served as Interim Executive Director.A Vietnam veteran, Wally served in the U.S. Army, 101st Airborne Division. As a paratrooper, he received the Bronze Star and other commendations for meritorious service.
