When I stop to think about why I chose software development as the next step in my life, a lot of things come to mind. Flexible work hours, the ability to work remotely, good pay, the future is in technology, and that my skillset is suitable for the work to name a few. But even beyond these readily apparent reasons, there is a deeper reason drawing me to it, and simply put, it would be the freedom of it. The feeling that there is something that needs to be created, something that needs to be built, a problem to be solved, and not only that but that there is personal expression within it. There are so many possible ways to create a solution to any given problem, and each different way that is created is an extension of the developer that created it. To be able to freely express oneself through their work is similar to being an artist or a writer. Through software we are given the tools to express ourselves and create our own masterpieces. It is this that draws me away from my background in Nuclear Operations and maintenance that I spent five long and hard years doing in the US Navy. It would have been easy to just live out my days doing the same thing and then eventually retire with a comfortable pension, but would I look back on my life and be proud of the things that I had done?I started my software journey by teaching myself the fundamentals of Python, Javascript, HTML, and CSS. Seeking a more guided approach to applying the skills that I learned, I joined LEARN Academy's full-stack developer bootcamp where I learned to apply the skills I had and also learned new skills, such as React, Ruby, Ruby on Rails, and React on Rails in a hands on learning environment. I plan on using the skills that I have, as well as collaborating with those who have skills I don't, to change the world for the better. It is my goal to raise awareness of social problems, as well as self-awareness, and doing this through education and social interaction. I encourage questions and seeking the truth and meaning behind everything that we do. "Nothing worth having comes easy"
