Energy Systems Researcher
During my time at the LIINES, I worked as both a member of a team and individually as an assistant to graduate endeavors in the field of energy systems analysis. I became proficient with Python and two GIS softwares, ArcGIS and QGIS, through my work in the lab. This experience also strengthened my organizational and communication skills. As a member of the LIINES, I worked on two separate projects. For my first project, I engaged with a large data set of information on regional energy consumption and formatted it for use in data analysis and mapping efforts. The goal of this research was to show future trends in energy usage in the US from 2019 to 2050 in the form of a map showing energy usage in each region of the US as a function of time. These efforts required proficiency in Python and QGIS, which I learned independently before and during my time in the lab. Many of our team's methods were novel endeavors requiring creative use of our GIS software and unique data formatting algorithms. After creating a reliable formatting algorithm for my first task, I was placed on a new project which had me working with GIS software to visualize electric grids for use in Hetero-functional Graph Theory.
Researcher
During my two summers under Jill Barnholtz-Sloan at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, I assisted with graduate-level biostatistics research on glioblastoma and other forms of brain cancer. I used R as my primary tool for data analysis, but I also gained experience working with high performance computing clusters. I received the Grant Roth Research Grant for my continued work in biostatistics during my time with Dr. Barnholtz-Sloan.In my first summer, I manipulated large gene and pathway data sets and used multiple algorithms to detect genes that may cause an increased incidence of glioblastoma in males over females. I relied on R to format the data for consumption by the different algorithms, which were executed on Case Western Reserve University's High Performance Computing cluster using bash scripts in Linux. I was named first author on one publication related to the research I took part in, and it is linked below. In my second summer, I worked closely with a partner to work on developing an R package that can be used to calculate the amount of disorder/entropy within glioma histology slides, which is theorized to predict certain characteristics of the tumor, such as survivability. The package is currently not available to the public, as it is still in development and has not yet been accepted by CRAN. My work will be incorporated into a future paper that will hopefully be accepted by a related publication.
Math And Reading Tutor
During my time at Kumon, I tutored K-12 math and reading to students in grades ranging from K-10.
