Assess government's role in serving the taxpayers, listen to citizen requests and vetting those requests, strategic planning for Polk County (worked on and supported 20/20 Vision Plan and Strategic Water Plan), planning for long-term capital needs (i.e. creating water system & obtaining water source & helped start the process of aquiring necessary Watershed designation from State of NC), planning and implementing short term capital needs (i.e. renovating condemned historic Courthouse Bldg,, relocating Senior Center & DSS from an antiquated facility in need of condemnation, to newer renovated facility in the case of Senior Center, and to a newly constructed facility in the case of DSS); working to create cost-effective county-wide mobile recycling system to encourage and increase recycling, thus reducing solid waste; working on various volunteer boards and interacting with citizens to better understand county needs ( worked Library Board, Council on Aging), represented Polk County on regional commission (Western Carolina Community Action) to reduce poverty-related issues in families (using federal grant funds to help families move from poverty and government dependence to job training and acquisition, establishing credit, and working toward independence); worked to keep tax rates flat, while helping to alleviate long-neglected capital needs, and planning for future maintenance of County facilities, and planning for County growth and the demands on County services associated with that growth.
