About Wayne Barnes
I have recently returned to Vanuatu working in Port Vila with the fledgling ambulance service - Promedical - as a volunteer with the Australian Volunteer Program (initiative of the Australian Government). While I provide my host organisation with Intensive Care capacity for operational response, my main focus is to assist in training of student paramedics and to conduct assessments of their clinical and practical skills and knowledge as a qualified trainer and assessor. This is my fourth tour to Vanuatu since 2016 and my second as an AVP volunteer. It allows me the opportunity to utilise all the teaching and assessing skills that I first developed as a clinical instructor on-road, and further refined as sessional lecturer over the past six years. The previous seventeen years working as an Intensive Care Paramedic with Ambulance Victoria, and I still find it rewarding to see positive outcomes in managing a patient with a complex injury or illness. I have fulfilled a number of operational and support roles as a senior clinician; including a secondment to the State Emergency Communications Centre; providing clinical oversight and consultation, and patient advocacy for all despatch and transfer activities for state-wide rural Operations. Accredited and experienced in working as an intensive-care single-responder, and also trained in Level-A CBR, and USAR (Cat II), MSAR.Over recent years I have been involved in a variety of prehospital training and education roles; delivering an annual continuing education program to professional paramedics, as well as delivering training and assessment to first-responder volunteers (under the VET framework), and developing accreditation and validation documentation for maintenance of RTO registration. I also have worked as a consultant trainer delivering units of competency for emergency response roles in the oil and gas industry in alignment with the structures and processes of Incident Control System (ICS) i.e. AIIMS, CIMS. I would still like to remain involved in health development and reform in areas of poor privilege (both developed and developing nations). I have completed a Masters in Public Health with a focus on developing nations, refugee health, and disaster response and management.Specialties: Emergency Care, Intensive Care, Specialist Urban and Marine rescue, Disaster Response, Primary Health Care, Health Reform
Listed skills include Emergency Medicine, Emergency Services, Emergency Management, Clinical Research, and 36 others.

My language skills also experienced a solid 'work-out' and fortunately did not let me down. Santo has a far larger francophone population than previously encountered in Vila. Clinical guidelines also had to be adapted to prolonged treatment and transport times of remote patients; frequently jobs lasting 8-10 hours. Show less
