Employing, training and retaining owner drivers for Australia's largest independently owned transport company

As per the attached appoinment announcement, Metropolitan Express promoted me to a new role of South/East Area Manager overseeing all contracted sites in S/E Melb. I was responsible for ensuring that all depots were achieving KPI's, that all drivers and staff were following correct procedures and complying to various regulations from truck weights to fatigue management laws, for the upkeep of company vehicles and equipment, and for return to work and OH&S issues. I was also involved in the performance management of drivers and staff, reported on various kpi's and p&l sheets, and supervised charging and payroll. I worked on tenders and quoting for new business, and visited clients as a direct point of contact. I spent several months at new customer sites implementing new services and training new supervisors.I also later managed the Dandenong ad-hoc depot, servicing clients mainly based in the steel and construction industry with company rigids, crane trucks and semis. I supervised the despatching of work to a fleet of subcontractor couriers servicing urgent medical requirements 24/7.

Managing a team of 2 schedulers, a payroll/accounts clerk, a 24 hour shunting requirement on site, various subcontractors and aproximately 20 company trucks and drivers, with the task of safely delivering Bluescope's product on time in full to its clients every day. I established an excellent relationship with the client, achieving a difot of 99.8% or better in every quarter that I managed. I drove a huge focus on load restraint compliance and OH&S to ensure that all employees went home safely at the end of each day. I was responsible for helping prepare and present weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports to key Bluescope personell, supervised charging and payroll as well as the upkeep and maintenance of vehicles and equipment on site. I also managed and implemented transport services at several regional sites including Morwell, Ballarat, Geelong and Warrnambool.

Managed the adhoc taxi truck and courier division servicing the transport requirements of clients all over Melbourne. This involved overseeing the radio room, call centre and sales department, completing reports with Kpi's to the State Manager, attending monthly or review meetings at major clients, as well as some temporary stints based at customer sites implementing new permanent transport services. This included sourcing trucks, training drivers as well as training the site supervisors to manage the sites.

My career at Allied Express started in the role as Driver Training Manager, where I developed media advertisements and conducted information nights sucessfully recruiting subcontractor drivers. I trained them and promoted the monitoring of earnings to encourage the retention of drivers and won employee of the year in 2004 . I was then promoted to Operations Manager, and later filled in as acting State Manager overseeing 250 subcontractor and company vehicles, a large call centre and a warehouse with 3pl and interstate linehaul.

I built an interstate freight division from scratch, developed a three man sales team, won tenders to do urgent courier work for several large companies including CUB, A.N.Z, and Boral. I was then promoted to Operations Manager, overseeing the despatching of up to 1200 urgent courier jobs a day to over a hundred vehicles, managed a call centre with 6 staff, and monitored the delivery of 20k-30k per week worth of interstate freight before the company was purchased by Allied Express in 2003.
