The voters of North Carolina elected me as the State's 10th Insurance Commissioner in 2008 and re-elected me in 2012. In this job, I also serve as the State Fire Marshal. Since taking the oath of office, I have saved individuals, families and businesses more than $2.4 BILLION through insurance rate cuts, refunds, rebates and restitution, and fighting insurance fraud. Through the work of my team, we've helped ensure that North Carolina drivers have the lowest average automobile insurance premiums in the South and, as of an April 2015 report, the lowest in the USA. This business owns a historic building in downtown Rockingham and leases office space to various businesses, including Wells Fargo (formerly Wachovia Securities, formerly First Union). The business has owned additional properties in the past.

I managed and provided oversight of the Western Regional and Eastern Regional Offices of the NC Department of Insurance, which effectively provided services to approx 60 counties. Also, my job duties included oversight of the Office of State Fire Marshal, providing counsel to then-Insurance Commissioner Jim Long on Council of State matters involving billions of dollars, as well as political issues.

I provided legal counsel to the Insurance Commissioner and others regarding matters both within and external to the Department of Insurance. Topics included insurance law, contracts, building codes, and public safety.

I represented individuals, businesses and non-profits, and was involved in all matters of insurance litigation.

The people of my two legislative districts elected me 4 times - for a total of eight years - to represent the counties of Richmond, Scotland, Montgomery & Stanly. I championed economic development, consumer protection, insurance reforms, public education, and public safety. Subsequently, my spouse, Melanie Wade Goodwin, served three terms herself representing Richmond & Montgomery counties.
