OneChip Photonics develops transceivers for FTTP based upon its proprietary photonic integrated circuit technology. In my first two and a half years at OneChip we improved the receiver sensitivity of our optical transceiver by 100x and the transmitted power by more than 10x. This resulted in among the best performance in the industry.We developed two new technologies, both designed at OneChip and fabricated at external vendors: (1) a high-frequency silicon optical bench and (2) an indium-phosphide photonic integrated circuit.We built a large Engineering team with three Directors and set up a pilot line in Ottawa for prototype production. Overseas manufacturing began in the summer of 2012.

Aegis Lightwave (now part of Photop) manufactured optical channel monitors using tunable optical detectors based upon a proprietary tunable optical filter technology. I was the VP of Engineering when the company started. We developed optical channel monitors based upon an internally grown and fabricated, low-cost, thermo-optically tuned filter. It was critical to show that a channel monitor which incorporated a new filter technology could meet rigorous telecom reliability standards. We used proprietary signal-processing algorithms in our channel monitor to improve filter performance.Manufacturing was transferred to Asia. I created a formal New Product Introduction process at Aegis which specified a framework for all new product development programs. Aegis was ISO 9001 certified.

Lasertron developed and manufactured semiconductor lasers and photodetectors for fiber-optic communication. I started at Lasertron as a Sr. Staff Engineer, having previously done only research. When I left Lasertron I was the Director of Pump Laser Development and Package Development for all product lines. The company was acquired by Corning for its industry-leading pump laser product which accounted for most of the company's revenue and profits. Pump lasers supplied optical power for optical fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). Corning was the world's leading supplier of these amplifiers. During my short time as the Director, Lasertron introduced its first internally designed and fabricated pump laser chips and several new pump laser products. Prior to then we had packaged laser chips purchased from IBM. After purchasing the chips for several years we decided to license the IBM process in order to produce the chips at Lasertron. A new manager of the technology-transfer process was hired. After 10 months of zero chip yield there was a crisis and I was asked to lead the program. Six weeks after I took over we improved our yield from zero to 85%, higher than the IBM yield. Later we introduced several generations of internally developed pump laser chips for EDFAs and for Raman amplifiers.As Director, I also led a program to increase the amount of power coupled from our laser chip into the optical fiber in the laser package. This resulted in a new patented fiber lens design with higher power yield which became our manufacturing standard.

I performed research as Principal Member of Technical Staff. I developed a patented fabrication process which we used to make 980 nm-wavelength pump laser chips from quantum-well wafer structures grown at GTE. These semiconductor lasers produced some of the highest single-mode powers measured at that time. Lasertron wanted to purchase these chips from GTE but my manager was only interested in research at that time.I set up an optical and electronic test laboratory for characterization of these semiconductor laser chips.We performed measurements of the optical noise spectra of these quantum-well lasers which showed that their intrinsic frequency response was worse than predicted by the current theory. This led us to propose and publish (ECOC, Paris 1991) a new, revised rate-equation model of quantum-well lasers which added a third differential equation to describe capture of electrons by the well. It became the accepted model and designs based upon this model quickly resulted in a doubling of previously achieved maximum modulation bandwidth.The Laboratories recognized me with my second award and bonus for outstanding research.

I learned laser resonator theory and designed an external resonator to extract maximum single-mode power from a multi-mode, broad-area laser chip. The work was published and widely recognized at technical conferences as a promising approach toward a compact, high-brightness laser source.
