Systems Manager
With the departure of our dba around 2008 and again in 2010, I became the temporary dba while we appointed someone new. While in and out of the role, I have developed my SQL skills writing reports and utilities for Tessitura - our Box Office system and Artifax - our room booking system. Frustrated with the limitations of our room booking systems and the functions it doesn't have, I decided to heavily modify it and add most things that had been asked for. As all the functionality was in the application and dlls the asp files call, I had to write everything (stored procedures, functions, web pages) from scratch and ensure it still worked with the original application. I hadn't coded in C# before this, but the is the language our developers use, so I wanted to follow suite. This is now in out production environment. We bought a HP c3000 and BL460C blades to move Tessitura onto and decided to virtualise some of the application servers as we were very short on space. We have learnt the configuration and correct setup of the Chassis and Blades and have since bought a second set for our new Finance system. My experience with ESXi started with v3, where I was very unsure on what everything meant. Today in V5, I am very happy with it and can have one of our HP servers, built, racked, firmware patched, ESXi installed, ESXi firmware patched and several copies of Windows 2008 R2 under way by the afternoon & still find time for a coffee. For the free version, as I couldn't find a low cost solution, I scripted out the ability to shut down a server, back the server up to OVF and restart the server again as an automated overnight process.I reinstalled, patched and reconfigured from scratch our HP Lefthand iSCSI SAN, after the company we paid to set it up did it incorrectly and dragged their heels on doing anything about it. This is the source for 3 vSphere Enterprise Hypervisors managed by vCenter which I reinstalled and the file storage for the users network drives.
Summary Of Roles And Responsibilities At The Rsc
My main role is in the back end systems, usually the part not many people understand. I also have to know how many of the front end systems work, but hopefully not to the same level as the system operators and how the two halfs and any hooks into the systems work. I am looking to get formal qualifications in all the items below. In the mean time, I administer, program, configure the following to an excellent level:VMWare Hypervisor and vCentre (and previous versions back as far as 3.5)All aspects of HP LeftHand SAN (iSCSI) from building to configuration and writing scripts for their scheduled usage .Current Windows Server and Workstation (and all previous versions back to DOS 6.22. With the exception of Vista - there was no Windows Vista [& repeat])SQL 2012 (and previous back to SQL 7) admin, configuration, maintenance, SP, trigger & function writing and SSRS reportsAVAYA Communications Manager (V4 & 5) and Audix managementFunctions including Active Directory,DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, IISC# web, REST and SOAP web service writing, console appsMost major Microsoft suite of user driven programsComfortable with the configuration and setup of most systems. To name a few of the user driven larger products:iTrent (Payroll/HR), Tessitura (Box Office/CRM) and Access Dimensions/Focalpoint (Financial)Automation and scripting of varying complexity. Mostly in dos/vbs. More recently, C# console and Powershell are the appropriate tools.Hardware and software firewall configFirmware/Software Patching. H/W replacementVery good analytical skills, prepared to find a solution to most problems and in a trusted position for all systems where the (un)written rule about SysAdmins apply.Recent interests in the light of PCI DSS restrictions and security areLinux Server and Workstation platform installation and configuration.SFTP Configuration and lockdownSome PHP and MySQL skills
Senior It Technician
For a number of years now, we were supporting a new box office system "BOCS" that ran on VMS and reported using Oracle 8 and Crystal Reports. The new system required BOCA thermal printers and dot matrix printers that required regular maintenance.I scripted out the transmission of the BACS file to HSBC, which we later replaced with EigerPay Gateway for transmission from AS/400 and intel based systems. I was heavily involved in the configuration and setup of the software and am still called on for all BACS query today. We changed Payroll systems again to MidlandHR Trent 6.x and worked closely with the Payroll Manager for all data transfer, software setup, reporting (Business Objects), security within the application and basic disaster recovery. We had various new systems installed, some with database back ends, some simple. I have been involved with most. The most significant is the new box office system Tessitura. This combined the original BOCS system with our fundraising system Raisers Edge along with CMS. This meant learning new skills, the main ones being SQL 2005, Infomaker, Reporting Services, Web Services, CommsXL/TNSi credit card server, QAS PAF.During this time we had several additional sites added to the WAN via Fortigate firewall, an additional 1000 seater theatre added and a new building added for the majority of staff. These all needed taking care of in addition to the roles in the previous job.Around 2007/08 my skills had moved away from networking, as systems were taking up more of my time and the network layout was getting too complex. I still needed to know how, where and why, but didn't do any configuration of the main network past this point, with the exception of the odd firewall change.
It Technician
I worked as technical support in a team of 4 people in IT. The team was 2 support staff, 1 admin, 1 Manager + Support. The requirement was to support several small flat networks running on a combination of D-Link, 3COM, Netgear switches and hubs on a Netbeui and TCP network over 6 different sites. 4 Stratford-upon-Avon and 2 London. The environment was primarily windows based. Workstations were a mixture of Desktops, Towers and Laptops running DOS 5.x, 6.22, windows 3.11, 95, 98, NT3.51, NT4, Windows 2000. Servers were NT3.51, NT4, W2000, Novell 3.x and 4.x, Lotus Notes, AS/400 Finance System named JBA System21 (latter versions are known as Infor Aurora System 21), SCO-UNIX Box Office system named RITA, SCO-UNIX payroll system called DamanPay which was replaced with Prolog4People (now known as Northgate) and a Unix based retail systemBoth of the us support staff were expected to be able to administer all the servers, take daily backups, administer the network, rebuild all PC operating systems, replace defective hardware components in workstations, replace and support printing and plotting and provide technical assistance on the phone or in person over both main sites for software issues. Basically, if it had a chip in it, we were called. The only time we didn't help is when we were called as their office radiator was leaking water.I would be tasked with upgrading the UNIX Payroll system each time there was an update and the manual backup and restore of the data on this system. The internet and email was just creeping into the company, so in addition to the kilostream lines to different sites, we had a Symantec VelociRaptor hardware firewall installed and both of us learned to configure this correctly and to maintain the rule set.Around 2001, my colleagues interests went more to networking and mine to Systems, so it was around this point when I started to specialise in a different area. There was a huge overlap in skills on both our parts.
Wages Clerk
My roles here started as a fairly simple structured role: Key in dockets into a dBase databaseCollate other peoples dockets onto my PC and merge with my machines recordsProduce reports to look for anomalies in records and speaking to the employees about any issuesTime and attendance reportingPrinting and handing out payslipsPayslip queries.Once a week reception work answering the phone and greeting customers. My role changed towards early 1998 when we had a Novell 3.x server and Windows NT4 file server, both to run a Pegasus finance package. As well as my standard duties, I performed basic user role administration functions on these servers and tasked with manual tape backups of the systems. My role also became an informal support role to Coventry Apex Engineering (became Transtec Automotive) and BSK Engineering Coventry.
