We became the client’s IT department, handling all application system support and maintenance, upgrades, intranet and collaboration, dashboards and performance metrics, trouble tickets, custom application development and training.Business line #2 was a healthcare clinical system implementation consulting practice. The advancement of Information Technology in healthcare delivery required providers to transition from their legacy, paper-based charting and billing systems to new Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. My team of healthcare IT consulting professionals steered acute care, post-acute care and home health organizations through the process of implementing these new, complex EHR systems. From its roots as a local, family-owned commercial property owner, the organization grew into a power in commercial real estate. I directed all IT Operations and Engineering functions for this national Real Estate Investment Trust. With over 300+ commercial properties nationwide, CarrAmerica was a national presence. I managed all WAN/LAN and data center infrastructure, leading a team of 20+ hardware, networking, messaging and customer service professionals. We made significant strides in modernizing the network infrastructure and produced significant increases in operational services levels (99.96% uptime, 94% user satisfaction) while reducing costs.The downtown Washington, DC location of the primary data center was viewed as a significant risk, given the increased awareness of potential threats after 9/11. We also had a distributed network of servers in regional data centers spread throughout the country, leading to increased support overhead. To address both of these areas of concern, we migrated the primary data center to a co-location facility in a safer location and Citrix technology was implemented to centralize application delivery, data storage and backup services.As a publicly-traded company, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) imposed significant compliance requirements on the organization. Our IT compliance audit was recognized by the SOX auditor as best practice-level with zero deficiencies.
