Grand Rapids ADAPT is a local chapter of ADAPT Michigan which is, in turn, a state chapter of National ADAPT. Our national goal is to end the institutional bias of Medicaid Long Term Supports and Services--presently, in most states, a great majority of this Medicaid funding is reserved for institutional settings while home and community based services (HCBS) are capped. State and local activities support the national goal. We also attend two national actions each year, where we engage in direct-action--most often civil disobedience--to hold policymakers and the United States legislature accountable for their role in the perpetuation of this infraction of civil rights.
My personal advocacy goal is to free people with disabilities from being forced into nursing homes. At DAKC I am involved in any activity that supports this goal: affordable, accessible, integrated housing; enforcement of accessibility legislation and policy, including sidewalks, places of business, and government facilities; and the expansion of accessible transportation systems.
Enforcement of access laws and policy.
