At Netflix, Wei is in charge of streaming engine, adaptive streaming algorithm, cdn selection algorithm and et al inside Netflix device SDK.Wei is one of the original two people who developed a Netflix proprietary adaptive streaming algorithm. The development started as early as 2008. The technique enables Netflix to dynamically deliver streaming video to consumers consistently at the highest possible quality for the available bandwidth. Wei has continually improved this technique using simulations and customer a/b tests.Wei has multiple patents granted for the work he has done in the area of streaming media in Netflix.Wei implemented the streaming engine inside the Netflix device SDK, which powers tens of millions of devices, like Wii, PS3, Android devices, Roku box, lots of set top boxes, blu-ray players and digital TVs.

Core team member to develop DF splash streaming server, which provides reliable delivery of high quality video over the internet.-- Implemented the packet scheduling algorithm and short term cache model of DF splash streaming server. Implemented the control protocol between DF splash streaming server and clients. Implemented a scheme which gathers statistics reported from clients. -- Designed and implemented a fault-tolerant MobiRadio backend system for streaming audio to various cell phone clients. This system transcodes incoming audio streams with different encoding formats into AAC/aacPlusv1 streams, creates LATM payload header and RTP header, and feeds the RTP streams to Darwin Streaming Servers (DSS). Used C++, Java, and Tomcat. -- Developed a fault-tolerant Windows Media Audio (WMA) Ingestion and Transcoding system. This system ingests and transcodes incoming WMA streams from Akamai, and feeds them to Windows Media Streaming Servers. This is the back-end system for Cingular's XM Radio used by hundreds of thousands' clients. Used C++ and C#. -- Developed customized modules for Darwin Streaming Server. Used C++ and Python.

Proposed a framework for distributing multiple descriptions coding (MDC) video over different paths/trees in wireless ad hoc networks to enhance the robustness of both unicast and multicast video streaming. Designed a model to estimate the performance of MDC video streaming over selected paths, and developed an interference-aware multipath routing protocol based on the model. Proved the feasibility of building multiple node disjoint trees in wireless ad hoc networks, and developed three multicast routing protocols, which build multiple node disjoint/nearly disjoint trees. Characterized and evaluated the proposed schemes through NS-2 simulations and real experiments.
