I volunteered at New Orleans Musicians Clinic and Assistance Foundation (NOMC/AF) during my first months in the States, helping with health surveillance, fund raising activities and outreach programs. I remain working part-time, coordinating nurse volunteers in outreach activities, health surveillance, and helping the clinic toward becoming a medical home .

Nurse practitioner for ten years in general practice/community clinics, Central London, UK. I worked with physicians, NPs, practice nurses, health care assistants and a large administrative team to provide care to large and diverse patient populations. My role developed over 6 years at a Beacon site and teaching practice for primary care (http://jameswigg.co.uk), last two practices were http://www.queenswoodmedicalpractice.co.ukand http://www.islingtoncentralmedicalcentre.org - where I shared my time between the two clinics. Managed patients with minor illnesses and injuries. As an independent prescriber I could prescribe medications for most conditions. I developed a home visiting service for our housebound patients with chronic conditions. I also initiated a chronic obstructive airways disease (COAD) clinic, with spirometry performed at the time of the appointment, by a trained Health Care Assistant. The clinic also screened for COAD in long term smokers. I have an interest in diabetes, and ran a weekly diabetes clinic for 3 years. I also managed a small project, working with a fellow NP to screen our population of 15,000 patients for diabetes, increasing prevalence comparable to local average. We identified a large number of patients with pre-diabetes, who were then monitored annually, given health promotion/education and so had opportunity to take preventive steps.I became familiar with developing templates and using EHR (EMIS) searches to help inform service provision and outreach activities, achieve quality outcomes, and understand the clinical picture of a patient population.Teaching medical and nurse practitioner students was a part of the role, also leadership and management skills as a senior member of the nursing team.
