Most models are 3D-printed, and students rarely sketch or draft. To challenge the students and engage them in a way they may not have been previously, we focused on materials and detailing. Using a site in Maui, we eliminated one building system (heat) and I urged them to consider self-sufficiency. Materials chosen for exploration were indigenous or readily available, as in recycled glass or metals. As Socrates wrote, "Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel," students were encouraged and questioned rather than directed. They tested their materials and explored alternate methods of joinery (no glue was allowed!), while considering the implications of footprint and profile with the sky.Their final project was developing a collection of tiny houses, similar to a bed and breakfast. A separate structure, the 'ohana served as the land steward's residence and place of business. Each project identified a good or service to sell for money, satisfying the requirement that it be produced on-site. Show less
