About Werner Kaffl
Self-description is a tough thing, but I’ll give it a try.Throughout my life I’ve been working in various different fields. Mostly technical and/or creative stuff.I started as an electrician in my father’s company, then switched over to IT, then photography and later on to the film industry. I try to fill the gaps in between with lots of smaller jobs like renovating buildings, being a shop assistant or other casual work, if I find some. This allowed me to accumulate a very wide variety of skills. Be it manual, tradie and technical skills (electrician and IT), analytic skills for problem solving and workflow analytics (also part of being an electrician and IT person), to rather creative skills like in photography and prop making for films etc. Those skills helped me to create networks to fit users’ needs rather than the other way around (IT), it taught me how to light a scene for a photoshoot or movie as well as industrial or domestic lighting, to make parts I needed or wanted and even to be on the other side of a lens as an extra. I also learned how to literally create worlds in photography, to fit certain themes. Photoshop is a powerful tool if one knows how to use it.Film and photography related subjects became a big part of my personal life. I loved making things since I can remember. When my dad started his company, we didn’t have much money for toys, but he had a workshop! And he taught me how to make what I wanted. I did some small jobs like delivering newspapers etc to save up for some radio control and a first model ship kit. But I tired of those kits rather quickly, started to modify them, built my first RC cars from spare parts and some scrap metal. I also modified my bicycles or made some myself (with the help of a blacksmith in the neighbor village). In that time (late 1970s) I also learned how to use airbrushes, painted motorcycle helmets and car bonnets for my friends. Many of those skills are self-taught, learning due to interest, necessity or both. This became somewhat a guiding line for me. It helped me to make the props needed for some of my photographs and movie/TV props.Imagination and creativity is important to me, personally as well as professionally. And even more important is to make those thoughts reality. My dad also taught me to work with what I have. So I often use old or leftover materials rather than buying everything new. The same is true for established workflows, there is often room to optimize and/or to save or re-use materials. This is a form of creativity too. It’s a ‘can do’ attitude.
