Laser safety consulting, laser safety software, laser safety instructionI consult on specific projects, involving laser equipment, such as military combat simulators. I have also provided assistance for medical and scanning laser systems. I develop laser hazard analysis software, which is currently available from the Laser Institute of America and from Rockwell Laser Industries.I serve on the American National Standards Committee for Safe Use of Lasers, Z136. I served as chair of Standard Subcommittee 6, which developed the ANSI Z136.6 Standard for Use of Lasers Outdoors. I am currently chair of Technical Subcommittee 7 (analysis and applications), which provides example calculations for the Z136 series of standards. I also chair the SAE G-10T Laser Safety Hazards Subcommittee, which provides guidance on conducting safe outdoor laser operations, such as that contained in SAE AS 6029A.

I managed the Laser/Optical Radiation Program, supervising seven physicists, each expert in the field of optical radiation safety.

I have evaluated the hazards from the beams of hundreds of laser devices, including major military purchases, such as the Target Acquisition and Designation System on the AH-64 Apache Aircraft and the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System for combat training, calculating the hazard distance, reflection hazards, necessary optical density for protective eyewear, and general compliance with Federal and military performance requirements, providing a definitive report on each.
