Yoga Union Backcare, Scoliosis and Therapy Center (YUBSTC) makes Yoga available to everyone of all ages and abilities, including those with injuries, pain, differently shaped spines/bodies and spinal fusions, no matter what their range of motion. • YUBSTC helps students, with the use of symmetry and intelligent alignment, to sustain practice in a safe and productive manner. Yoga for NY (www.YogaforNY.org) represents Yoga studios in New York State.NY State attempted to license Yoga Teacher Trainings in 2009. The licensing had nothing to do with quality of teaching. The licensing ensured only that a refund be available in the event a TT were to shut down without returning tuition. The process would have entailed audits, site inspections and so on, making it needlessly burdensome and essentially requiring all TTs to be "domiciled," or for those renting space for Teacher Trainers to go through the licensing process. It also raised the question of how to deal with TTrainers visiting NYS (should they be licensed so that they can come to NYS?), and other issues. We successfully resolved the issue, and a bill exempting Yoga TT's from licensing was signed into law by Governor Paterson in 2010. As head of Y4NY, I was able to deflect the city's attempt to tax Yoga classes in Yoga studios, something that I was repeatedly told was impossible. Currently Yoga for NY is working to resolve issues regarding the independent contractor status of Yoga teachers, and space permits for Yoga studios.All Yoga teachers, Yoga students and Yoga studios should consider being a member of Yoga for NY!
