My introduction to the world of occupational health and safety began back in early 2008 with my role as a training facilitator for Shaw Communications. As part of this role, I was involved in the development and facilitation of the company’s health and safety programs. A role that both challenged and fascinated me as I learned more and more about the legal, technical and moral puzzle that is today’s occupational health and safety.Fast forward to 2012. After four extremely fulfilling years working as part of Shaw’s extremely talented learning and development team, I made the difficult but extremely exciting decision to pursue full-time employment in occupational health and safety. Now eight years into my career, I can say with confidence it has become one of the best decisions of my life. The past years working as an occupational health and safety advisor in the oil and gas industry have been some of the most rewarding, and most certainly, the most challenging years of my working life. Years that have led me to a personal belief that success in creating an incident-free workplace boils down to this formula.Knowledge + Motivation = A Safe Day of Work. When people have the knowledge required to work safely and are motivated to use that knowledge, they are far more likely to complete a safe day of work. Now, this may be a simple formula, but it is far from simple to solve. It is the pursuit of this solution that drives me toward continuous learning and improvement in every aspect of occupational health and safety I become involved in. Continuous learning and improvement that I am driven to share with the companies and individuals I have the pleasure to work with every day.Safe work can happen. Safe work must happen.
