I was 20 and in the Navy when I first learned that I get excited about IT, and excites me for many reasons. The fact it affords me the opportunity to connect with people and make their lives better is up there as one of the biggest. I respect and appreciate that everyone comes to the table with a different level of understanding and need for IT, but everyone comes with value. These differences give me the opportunity to connect and really listen, meet people where they are at, and create solutions for what they are looking for.Since before the dot-com boom IT has been on the edge of the next greatest advancement on a global level. This keeps the job fast-paced, demanding, and new. These are the challenges I enjoy, and it keeps me excited and eager to learn what is next. Through the customer support and solutions aspect of IT, I get to be part of creating solutions and building relationships with the most diverse group of people. There is no job better than affecting global change through the development of relationships with the common language of IT.I have always been an outside-the-box thinker and creative person. I was self-taught in the IT field while enjoying my first career as a marine captain. I then when on to formally educate myself in the IT industry.Though Pilot Boat Captain was a fast-paced and demanding career, I started a company in end-user PC support which grew through word of mouth to include merchant ships systems computers. The ships’ systems computers were all in the native language of the user of the machine and it was then that I felt the global impact of IT firsthand. The feeling of walking in with a set of tools I had created and the gratification of walking out knowing I had fixed the issue with those tools. That feeling was second only to the enjoyment I got from connecting and clearing some cultural hurdles along the way. I was often humbled by the trust and appreciation a stranger from another land was willing to express, and I revisit those memories often to keep in mind just how deeply people attach to their IT needs. This serves me and keeps me attentive to a critical aspect of IT.I look forward to my next adventure!
