About Will Johnson

I am a writer, journalist, painter, and photographer from the Cowichan Valley of B.C.I currently work as a writing mentor, playwright and freelance journalist based in Duncan. I'm a regular contributor to the Squamish Chief and Whistler’s Pique magazine, and I'm an editorial volunteer for the Malahat Review. Before moving to Vancouver Island in 2019, I served as Humber Literary Review's interviews editor while working as a reporter for the Nelson Star. Other publications I've worked at include the Whitehorse Star, the Trail Rossland News, the Martlet and the Ubyssey. My journalism has received a number of awards, including the 2011 John H. MacDonald Award for Arts Writing.My creative work has appeared, among other places, in Quillette, The Fiddlehead, Prairiefire, Little Fiction and Island Writer. My story “Sea to Sky” won a $2000 fiction prize and was nominated for a National Magazine Award. My non-fiction essay “My Little Sister” appeared in the anthology Somebody’s Child, published by TouchWood Editions in 2011. Three of my stories appeared in the collection Coming Attractions from Oberon Press in 2014: "Sea to Sky"​, "Concrete Monsters"​ and "This is how you talk to strangers"​. I am the author of the illustrated folklore tale The Ballad of Shuswap Joe, and I’m currently working on a sequel. I have my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Victoria (UVic) and my Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of British Columbia (UBC).
