As a full stack developer, I now have greater responsibility in niche areas of Takeflite, particularly in departure control. I started work on a re-structure of the way our system handles DCS operations, utilising modern and efficient technology like Azure Functions, Entity Framework and Azure Service Bus. I also utilise this technology in other parts of the system, such as flight logs and reservations.

After one year’s internship at Takeflite, I was offered and accepted a role as a Junior Software developer, where I work mostly in the departure control area of the company’s software suite. This involved preparing our application for deployment with Amadeus ACUS common-use platform at Wellington International Airport. This allowed agents to perform DCS operations using common-use peripherals, such as ATB and BTP printers. In this role I work with both our older Win-forms applications and Web services written in Visual Basic and C#.

Given my interest in passenger service systems, I was familiar with Takeflite and had been following the company. Through an introduction, I had the opportunity to become a paid intern. This allowed me to have hands on experience, with many opportunities to learn about technology that I was interested in. I was able to contribute with my user experience with PSS from working with Air New Zealand.

As a shore-excursions manager assistant, I am there to help ensure the safe dispatch and travel for cruise-ship passengers on shore-side excursions. On-site at the Port of Tauranga, I assist in pier-side operations for cruise passengers embarking on memorable shore-side experiences in the Bay of Plenty region, which had been booked directly with the cruise line. This included reporting information to the shore-excursions manager such as passenger counts and dispatch times. I worked with passengers and crew from large cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean International, Princess Cruises, Viking Ocean, and Celebrity Cruises.

After working in the Koru lounge for a few months, I was enjoying the airport environment and wanted a more involved role at Tauranga Airport. In this role I was a first point of contact for passenger checking in and travelling on Air New Zealand services departing from Tauranga. I specialised in working with passengers with special requirements, such as Unaccompanied Minors, and passengers with disabilities. Furthermore, this role helped me develop my understanding of airline logistics concepts like ticketing, departure control, and airport operations.

Because of my long-term ambissions to work in the travel industry, I decided to take up employment working in the Air New Zealand Koru Lounge via a contractor (Compass Group NZ). My role in Tauranga’s premium pre-departure lounge involved ensuring a seamless luxury pre-flight experience for the flag carriers most premium customers, along with Star Alliance Gold travellers. My role included food prep and maintaining a relaxing environment in the lounge. During the COVID-19 omicron outbreak, my role also included serving food and pouring drinks.
