After growing up and attending college in the Pacific Northwest, I spent 14 years in the rural Alaskan interior working as a GIS Analyst for a Soil and Water Conservation District in Delta Junction. Like most small organizations, my coworkers and I had to wear many hats, being flexible, self motivated, and willing to learn. ESRI ArcMap GIS software has always been at the core of my work and I'm very familiar with standard GIS tasks such as making maps, organizing geodata, data analysis, working with rasters, 3D surfaces, Lidar data, etc. In addition to common GIS tasks, I have also:- Planned and executed large scale, multi-year, seven-figure-budget natural resource projects such as soils, vegetation, and wetlands surveys.- Managed and participated in all major tasks of such surveys, including data collection strategy, remote field logistics, fieldwork, data analysis, and report writing.- Used remote sensing techniques to map roughly one million acres of vegetation, soils, and geomorphology on Army training lands in interior Alaska.- Used high precision RTK GPS systems and mastered the spatial reference issues necessary to reliably use and integrate these data for site topography, construction grade control, ground checking Lidar, etc.- Used ArcGIS Online to deploy and manage field data collection programs such as Collector.- Become comfortable with several modes of backcountry transportation, such as ATVs, snowmobiles, Argo all terrain vehicles, jetboats, as well as contracting small planes and helicopters.After returning to the Pacific Northwest in late 2022, I founded a consulting business called Mount Erie GIS.In summer 2023, I took a position as a project scientist with Natural Systems Design.I feel that my main strength is approaching natural resource issues with a "big picture" mindset, aggregating inputs from multiple disciplines to solve problems and answer questions without getting bogged down in the weeds. My primary professional interest is to combine a knowledge of geomorphology and ecology to understand how whole landscapes function, and to use that understanding as a foundation to answer natural resource and land management questions.
