About Aaron A. Lee, P.E.

I am driven by the challenge of balancing water infrastructure development with protecting/restoring healthy and productive watersheds. My specific interest is in the emerging practice of dam removal, and the subsequent impacts to river morphology and ecology.Graduate of UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (with Distinction), and a civil engineer (EIT) specializing in river morphodynamics, computational hydraulic modeling and field data collection. My project experience includes flood impact studies, dam safety, hydraulic design and hydrographic surveying.

A Monte Carlo method was used to evaluate the uncertainty in breach peak outflows from the potential range of breach parameters. Innovations from this study include a fully 2D unsteady hydraulic model, and flood maps described by probability of exceedance of peak outflow from dam failure.

This research was a collaboration between Deltares (the Netherlands) and J-Power (Japan). The primary objective was to link sediment transport dynamics with Chinook salmon spawning habitat by utilizing a two-dimensional, process-based numerical model (Delft3D). The model provided valuable insight in predicting impacts to adult fish passage from dam removal.Worked in a global environment that promotes collaboration and knowledge sharing. This research employed state of the art numerical modelling software and high performance computing.
