About William Bargar
Dr. William Bargar is a retired orthopaedic surgeon. For nearly 35 years he had an active academic and private clinical practice as an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement. He began his practice at UC Davis and in 1986 moved it to Sutter General Hospital. In addition to his busy clinical practice, he was also active in the field of medical research, where he combined his engineering background with his love of medicine and surgery. He became a pioneer in the development of custom-made implants and computer-assisted navigation. He is the inventor of ROBODOC, the first active surgical robot. In 1992, at this hospital, he performed the world’s first robot-assisted surgery. ROBODOC was recently accepted into the National Museum of American History at The Smithsonian Institution as the first surgical robot in US history. Dr. Bargar has published 77 journal articles and has presented his work at numerous national and international meetings.
