Numbers Don’t Lie: Creating an Improved KHSAA Rating System - Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) uses only the Associated Press poll and the computerized Litkenhous rating system to rank teams. While the Litkenhous ratings are not subject to the bias of human polls, its flaws are well-known and has often produced skewed rankings. In this project, we are developing an aggregate rating system that blends the ideas of three well-respected computerized rating systems and applying it to KHSAA football and basketball. Ideally this system will minimize the negative aspects of other ranking systems like the Litkenhous, and will be an accurate summation of how successful a team has performed throughout a season.

Effective Teamwork: Analyzing How Individual Lineups Affect the Win Probability of a Basketball Team Sports analytics is an ever-growing field that continues to improve the quality of performances and play by athletes. My research quantifies the issues associated with the current plus/minus metric being used by basketball analysts and aims to remedy them with a new metric that quantifies how players perform together rather than individually.
