I noticed our code was suffering greatly from Parameter Sniffing. I thoroughly tested performance with and without Parameter Sniffing turned on and against SQL Server expert opinions, I turned it off. Our performance problems in that area went away immediately. The reason ? Our code was too complex for the optimizer. I re-designed our use of TempDB. We use Ram Disk with 25 GB of space and a failover file to slow disks. The TempDB formula is more efficient if all file sizes are the same. I created all TempDB files and Log to reside on Ram Disk, with a SQL Agent Job monitoring space usage. If a process is using too much space and we are over 80% full, that process is cancelled. This happens very infrequently with our system. At times we process over 6 billion tempdb transactions from 8 am - 8 pm. With no blocking on our tempdb files.)I always take the Tools offered to us, and figure out how to make them work best in our situation.

It captures CPU, Memory, Disk, I/O, Locking, Deadlocks, TempDB, User Counts and Transaction Counts etc. We have IDERA but only for 5 Servers.• Upgraded SQL 7.0 and SQL 2000 Databases to SQL 2008• Converted SQL Server 2005 SSIS Packages to SQL Server 2008 SSIS Packages. • Create SQL Server 2008 SSIS Packages to meet business needs.• Create SSRS Reports to meet business needs• Create SQL Server Agent Jobs to meet business need• Enjoy performance and tuning using Server Side traces and DMV’s

Successfully Converted 20 SQL 7.0 Databases to SQL Server 2008 and 108 SQL 2000 Databases to SQL Server 2008 R2. Successfully converted 70 2005 SSIS Packages to 2008 SSIS Packages. I had the most fun I have had working in years. Of course I am blessed to be working in my chosen profession again :)
