Prior to joining QUT in 2005, worked at Sugar Research Institute (SRI), Mackay, QLD, as a Principal Research Chemist. At QUT led a group in the field of bioenergy, bioproduct, and biorefining using wastes as feedstocks. My vision and leadership as well innovative capacity led to the development of these areas at QUT. About 23 waste-to-value projects were created within a period of 6-7 years. Achievements by colleagues and myself, include the Mackay Renewable and Biocommodities Pilot Plant (which has attracted and is attracting a lot of research investments), the Banyo thermochemical Facility, and the Biomass to CMF Pilot Plant. I have over 260 peer-reviewed publications, won several awards including: (a) SRDC Innovation Award in Research and Development, (b) CRC-SIIB best Patent Award on lignin-based coating, (c) ASSCT Manufacturing Presidential Medal, and (d) QUT’s vice Chancellor Research Performance Award.My work on fouling of heat exchangers led to the blueprint for the development of effective cleaning formulations for sugar factory evaporators/heat exchangers in Australia and across the work and led to tailor design scale inhibitors for specific applications, including deposits in desalination plants.
