My first introduction to the sport of speed skating came when my parents entered me into the Saskatoon Open at the age of nine. I fell in love with the idea of going as fast as possible at every opportunity, and now, some 25 years later, I'm trying to instill that passion in the athletes I coach. I am fortunate today to hold a position as a member of Speed Skating Canada's high-performance coaching staff. Here, we provide a fun yet challenging environment for athletes to grow and develop as they pursue their Olympic dreams. My passion for coaching started shortly after I hung up the racing skates and was offered the opportunity to be a head coach with Speed Skating Manitoba. I was in the process of completing my BSc in Kinesiology when a good friend called up and convinced me to move to Winnipeg to be part of their high-performance program for junior athletes. I had the perfect opportunity to directly apply my education to developing training programs for these young athletes. I feel this was a fast-track way of developing my skills as a coach and developing an understanding of how to improve athletic performance. The best part was getting to feel and see the joy of the athletes as they broke the ceiling of their personal performance goals. It was a truly inspiring thing to witness and an opportunity for which I will always be grateful. I look forward to what the future holds, and I hope to help Canada's best achieve their goals at the 2026 Olympic Games.
