The goal of the Dynan laboratory is to obtain a better understanding of the biological effects of ionizing radiation and to apply this knowledge to help prevent and cure cancer.Current projects include a NASA-sponsored study of the health risks of galactic cosmic radiation and the development of a potential medical countermeasure. Other new work in the laboratory involves the characterization of exosomes, which are nanometer-scale vesicles involved in transport of DNA, RNA, proteins, and metabolites. Exosomes secreted by irradiated cells and tumors have a remarkable ability to stimulate host anti-tumor responses.
